This project investigates socially engaged art (S.E.A)’s participation in the process of cultural identification in post-1997 Hong Kong and Southeast Asia which is framed by a comparative context. There are altogether 21 case studies on S.E.A. conducted by 8 researchers from different countries. The symposium aims to encourage intellectual interchange of how S.E.A. interacts with and contributes to various forms of cultural identification, and to understand how art evolves in relation to social-political conditions. The exhibition serves as a platform for the researchers and subjects to revisit the materials of the case studies and select some of the most representative images, objects, and texts to reflect upon the merits and limitations of the S.E.A. case studies.
