In this seminar, Prof. Peter Nelson traces the evolution of a PhD project from its inception to publication. Drawing on his background as a professional artist, he will outline how an initial research proposal matures over a four-year timeline and how this complex inquiry is architected into a final dissertation and defense. The talk concludes by examining the distinct editorial process required to transform a doctoral thesis into a published book.

Prof. Peter Nelson is an Associate Professor working in fine art, media studies, computer games, and creative technology, with a career as a practising artist spanning over 20 years. His first book, Computer Games as Landscape Art (Palgrave Macmillan 2023) considers how first-person shooter computer games can be understood through the art historical lens of landscape, and his recent papers examine questions such as realism in the age of computer-simulated images and the role of AI in digital creative processes.
