“KOKO in Dialogue: Text-Image Parergon" - Portraits of Thought

Text and image converge in diagrams; diagrams operate beyond the opposition between text and image. The KOKO Webinar on Text-Image Parergon invites artists, designers and theoreticians to discuss the hidden dimensions of this thesis. Starting point for the discussions are contributions to the KOKO Space Text-Image Parergon (https://koko.zhdk.ch/text-image-parergon/). This online space is generated by a confluence of social media posts, their reflections by review processes and supplemented by commissioned contributions and driven by an interest in image based forms of artistic and academic discourse.

Michael Whittle (Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong) in conversation with Peter Benz (AVA)

In ‘Portraits of Thought’ British artist Michael Whittle will introduce some of his recent projects based upon contemporary scientific research and diagrammatic modes of representation. He will also discuss the influence that the philosophy of science and Japanese culture have had upon both his practice and research, and his attempt to develop a diagram-based ‘poetics of science’.

Michael Whittle is a research assistant professor at the academy of visual arts, HKBU, where he is a member of the augmented creativity lab. His research and studio practice draws upon images, ideas and data found in scientific research papers, and discussions with scientists about the concepts and motivations underlying their studies, and their methods of visualizing data.
