Joe will explore various exhibitions and artists who disrupt the expectations of displaying artwork in institutional spaces. There will be discussions on the rise of the archive as the locus of artwork, as well as the development of display as a place of disruption. Joe will talk about their own experience curating exhibitions and their approach to artist selection and nurturing a concept.

Joe will talk about their own experience curating exhibitions and their approach to artist selection and nurturing a concept.
Joe Nickols is a freelance curator and researcher currently working on a PhD project at SOAS, University of London. Joe's academic research is focused on East Asian art, particularly Japanese interwar protest art. As a curator, Joe has worked in commercial and public galleries, producing exhibitions, catalogues, and outreach programmes. Through close collaboration with artists, Joe has spearheaded multiple dynamic exhibitions across the UK. Joe champions artists that interrogate social issues in unconventional and disruptive ways. Joe is passionate about public engagement in the arts and ensures that each project has a resonance with multiple demographics. Joe has also published articles in various journals discussing topics of East Asian Art as well as their display.
