International Conference:Art, Place-making andResilient Cities

Funded by the Institute of Creativity of Hong Kong Baptist University, the 2017 International Award for Public Art (IAPA) is co-organised by Academy of Visual Arts and Institute for Public Art. The theme of 2017 IAPA conference is “Art, Place-Making and Resilient Cities”, which focuses on how art generates a sense of place and stimulates debate about quality of living through art in the public sphere.

The 2-day conference features 4 keynote speeches given by international renowned scholar, curators, artists and practitioners on the topics of Metaphor, Art, Place-making and Resilient Cities. Each speech is followed by a panel discussion accommodated by professionals of the public art field from around the globe.

The International Award for Public Art (IAPA) acknowledges specific public art projects of the highest achievement with a focus on art-led urbanism, place-making, community building and social practice.

The Award draws attention to the major contribution made by artists around the world to the quality of life, our shared environments and the importance of developing space to nurture citizenship and public wellbeing.

In addition to the recognition and celebration of quality, a primary goal of the Award is to stimulate debate about the value, articulation and qualities of public spaces among artists and allied professions, and among decision-makers in urban planning and design.

A related goal is education, supported by the sharing of information about projects, best practices, and innovative work around the world.
