The Academy of Visual Arts (AVA) was invited to participate in the Chiang Mai Photo Festival 2017 in Thailand (February, 2017). Three recent AVA graduates exhibited their photography works in the Main Exhibition, titled ‘Young Eyes +’. The ‘Young Eyes+’ is a collaborative exhibition features works by young photographers selected from 20 universities from Asia, Europe and North America, including Parsons School of Design, The New School (USA), Umeå Academy of Fine Arts (Sweden), Tokyo Polytechnic University (Japan), Chung-Ang University (Korea) and many other partner institutions across Southeast Asia. The exhibition was hosted at the Chiang Mai University Art Centre and the Festival attracted thousands of audience from Thailand, Southeast Asia and other parts of the world.
AVA presents three recent alumni’s works at the Chiang Mai Photo Festival, including ‘To Be Used Someday’ by Fion Hung Ching-yan (BA, class 2016), ‘Local Tourist’ by Terry Ng Hon-hei (MVA, class 2016) and ‘Whole’ by Leona Poon Mei-yee (BA, class 2016). Works by AVA graduates were highly received in the Festival. Professor Swetlana Heger-Davis, Dean of Umeå Academy of Fine Arts, praises AVA students’ works as conceptually strong, visually smart, and deal with personal and global issues through art.
AVA will take the initiative to explore international exchange partnership with other visual art institutions and will continue showcasing HKBU’s student achievements in the international art scene.
Chiang Mai Photo Festival was founded in 2015 by Gun Ketwech, a Thai curator and educator in photography. The Festival, running in a biennale format, is presented by the Faculty of Arts, Chiang Mai University, Thailand.
