In Conversation with Craig Clunas: Methodological Lessons and Research Practice in Art History
Widely recognized as a pioneering figure who transformed Chinese art history through the social history of art, Craig CLUNAS has, through his groundbreaking methodology, cemented the study of Ming and modern Chinese art as a crucial and dynamic field within global art history that resonates broadly across disciplines. In this workshop, Prof. CLUNAS traces the research practice behind his major works, from the Ming world of Superfluous Things and Empire of Great Brightness to the modern period explored in The Echo Chamber. The discussion examines method and decision-making across a research career, and offers methodological reflections on the evidence bases, theoretical commitments, and disciplinary debates that has shaped how he approached objects, texts, and archives.
This session is designed for doctoral students and early-career researchers, and is open to the public.
