Just two decades ago, prior to the Hong Kong sovereignty handover to China in 1997, questions of identity were at the forefront of cultural discourse in Hong Kong. Local artists and curators gave visual expression to local concerns about Hong Kong’s future, and the potential loss of political autonomy and cultural identity under China’s regime. Many exhibitions which explored local themes relating to Hong Kong’s identity were held at the time. After years of silence, in recent years, the concerns of regional/ HK identity in art increases again as Mainland government steps up its campaign, promoting cooperation and exchange in many areas, visual arts is one of the most controversial areas among all.
Questions arise: what are the implications of this closer relationship on visual arts field; and to what extent will it impact on the sense of local identity consciousness which artists have come to cherish?
Similar situations happened in Taiwan and how fine art, especially those presented using traditional medium, developed in response to this issue? How culture and tradition revealed or interpreted in the artworks and what challenges the artists in Taiwan have been facing in the past few decades.
This talk benefits the students to get an insider’s view about the development of modern and contemporary art in Taiwan and how visual art represents the culture and tradition in Taiwan, in particular, works represented in traditional medium and by what means, and what kind of audiences these works would attract, the responses from contemporary artists as well as art critics.
