In the second half of the twentieth century, clay as the medium of creation had a qualitative change after the Second World War. “Ceramics” or “pottery” is unable to describe the medium when it expresses artistic concept. Thus the speaker, Ching Yuan CHANG uses ” Clay Expression ” as a term for contemporary art form of using clay. Anything connected to the division of labour in the traditional ceramic making process has the possibility to be been subverted, or re-encoded. Reviewing the value of the craft, the purpose of firing and the rationality of the art concept become the most significant core in the spectrum of contemporary clay expression.
Born in 1960, Taiwan, Ching Yuan CHANG is the Professor and the Chair of the Graduate Institute of Apply Arts of the Tainan National University of the Arts since 1997. Chang received his MFA (Ceramic and Ceramic Sculpture) from the School of the American Craftsman, RIT in 1991 and had exhibited his sculptures and functional ceramics nationally and internationally.
