In this talk, Dr Evelyn Kwok will unpack the many intersections and complexities that intertwine migration, domestic work, public and private space, and political economy, while simultaneously trying to work around the conundrum of conducting fieldwork and interviews during a global pandemic.
Dr Evelyn Kwok is a Research Assistant Professor who has recently joined AVA in 2019. She is a spatial design researcher and her work focuses on the intersections of gender, labour and space. Her curiosity about the politics of public space motivated her to embark on a PhD project that explored how Foreign Domestic Helpers use public space on their weekly day off work. Since then her work has further contemplated the social and spatial implications of what may be dismissed as a banal occupation and consequent transformation of public space. She is currently writing her first scholarly monograph with Edinburgh University Press that ponders this topic within a political economy framework.
