One must identify as either a man or a woman. 'He' and 'she' represent two distinct gender norms in society, with the expectation that a man should be 'strong as steel' and a woman should be 'gentle as water.' These social constructs lead us towards a binary division of gender. In this exhibition, ten young artists, who are students from Hong Kong Baptist University's Academy of Visual Arts, have chosen to discard the traditional narratives of 'he' and 'she.' They were inspired by conversations with transgender individuals and collaborated with Mid Night Blue and Not a Gallery to create a series of visual narratives that aim to bridge and stimulate further discussions. By letting go of fixed gender stereotypes, they explore how we can gain a deeper understanding of an individual. Through contemplation and inquiry, we hope to broaden the understanding of gender identity.
