RePlace / RePlay challenges the mainstream understanding of Hong Kong jewellery as predominantly commercial and market orientated. Going beyond conventional ideas on materiality and value, the exhibition presents insights into a vibrant scene of ecologically aware creative practitioners from different generations and cultural backgrounds engaged with the upcycling of Hong Kong material culture.
For centuries, jewellery makers and goldsmiths have worked sustainably and created circular economies by melting and reshaping precious metal objects and remounting valuable gemstones. This longstanding practice of recycling has also informed recent practices by which jewellery designers have creatively reused waste materials alongside precious commodities to turn “trash into treasure.”
This exhibition presents research on upcycling practices in contemporary art and design in Hong Kong, a city that connects local with global practices while remaining rooted in Asia, one of the world’s top waste-producing and waste-receiving areas. Understanding craftsmanship as a way of thinking, the exhibition maps and investigates the pioneering roles of artists’ and jewellery designers’ sustainable practices.

RePlace / RePlay: Turning Trash into Treasure
After packaging materials have fulfilled their purpose, they are generally regarded as rubbish and end up in the trash bin. In this workshop, we will take a closer look at things that we usually consider as “waste”. With a bit of inspiration and some work, we will transform items that are often thrown away into beautiful “treasures”. Using packaging materials including disposable tableware, face masks, fruit wraps and other “garbage”, we will do some magic and create personalized jewellery items.
Date: May 15, 2021
Six workshop sessions starting at 11am, 12pm, 2pm, 3pm, 4pm and 5pm
Duration of each workshop: 60 minutes
Working kits will be provided. Participants are also welcome to bring their own materials, such as disposable packaging materials, disposable tableware, one-off face masks, and individual fruit protection nets.
Maximum number of participants per session: 8
Age requirement: above 12 years
Workshops mainly conducted in Cantonese, with supplementary English when necessary.
Organized by Ching Sze-Yin Cicy, Chong Yan Xuan Kimberly, Hoi Kan Kong Thomas, Kwok Pui Yi Esther, and Anna Grasskamp.
