Hong Kong Political Cartoon Talk Series - Politics / Comics / Storytelling - AVA CCL talk series 2020-21

Hong Kong Political Comics have undergone big changes in the past ten years. The framework of traditional political cartoons was revolutionized from visual languages, expression, theme to publication channel. The Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Protest in 2019 has demonstrated the impact brought by huge number of visual images in various format. Participation from the general public has also challenged the boundary of the political cartoons. From 4-panel comics, illustrations, printmaking, painting to digital images, different art forms could generate different political energy. In this talk, Lau Kwong Shing, Au Wah Yan and 鹿鳴 will share their experience in using various visual languages to tell the same story of Hong Kong.

Au Wah Yan 區華欣 
A comic artist and printmaker whose drawings and illustrations have been published in numerous local magazines and newspapers, including her comic strip “Me1 World” in Sunday Mingpao. Currently, she devotes much of her efforts to printmaking. A collection of short stories in print Dreams of a Toad was published in 2019 and Printhow, a printmaking collective started with her friends in 2017. Her latest short comic is Praying Mantis Combat.

Lau Kwong Shing 柳廣成 
Borned in Hong Kong, grew up in Japan, Lau Kwong Shing continues to create after returning to Hong Kong. He is the author of Cube Escape: Paradox, Zine, Fantaisie Ordinaire, Comic O Vol.4, Monsoon Vol.4 and The Fallen City: Hong Kong. He has published in magazine Zihua, As Artistic As You, Breakazine and Mingpao. His pencil drawing practice contributes to a strong personal style in which brushwork highlights atmosphere, as a way to explore, deconstruct and reconstruct "comic" as an art form.
