Can we subvert tradition with tradition itself? How can we intervene in the tradition of Chinese ink art through the lenses of gender? This exhibition proposes and attempts to answer these questions by featuring the ink and multi-media artworks of the Beijing-based female ink artist PENG Wei (HKBU’s Institute of Creativity Distinguished Visitor 2023-24) in dialogues with the latest selection of six artists from HKBU’s Academy of Visual Arts. It presents new dimensions of contemporary ink art in Mainland China and Hong Kong that incorporate individual responses to varied gender issues into the long-term male-dominated form of Chinese art – ink painting and calligraphy. It aims to bring innovative themes, new conversations, and young energy to the contemporary practice of ink art and its culture. Besides ink painting and calligraphy on paper or silk, it involves various other media, including photography, performance art, video, animation, fabric, glass, installations, etc., that borrow, reflect on, and revise the ideas from ink art and culture, which generates discussion on the boundaries of contemporary ink art. It explores challenging and subverting Chinese gender stereotypes and constructedness by embracing and negotiating the practice and concepts from the ink art tradition.
