On the occasion of his exhibition, Universal Heritage 共同遺産, the inaugural exhibition at Unit 7, Christoph Knecht will give an artist talk in collaboration with the Academy of Visual Arts, HKBU.
Universal Heritage brings together a variety of works produced by Christoph Knecht spanning the past ten years. It marks a continuation of influences embedded in his practice since several visits to China beginning in 2003. Here, iconography is borrowed, appropriated and re-presented – the artist as wanderer, exploring what it means to be out of context and, conversely, right at home.
Christoph Knecht was born in Karlsruhe, Germany in 1983 and currently lives and works in Düsseldorf. Knecht studied at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, Chengdu Fine Arts College, China and the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he graduated in 2012 as a Master student (Meisterschüler) of Peter Doig.
He currently holds a teaching assignment for painting, also at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, Germany.
Knecht has participated in group exhibitions in various venues around the globe including the Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt am Main, the Herzliya Museum of Contemporary Art, Israel, the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Oaxaca, Mexico, Recently he was awarded the Foundation Kunstfonds Bonn grant, 2018 as well as the BKC Bank Prize for 2019.
