“+1440” is an off-site exhibition by AVA students from the course of Exhibition Culture. This project is an experimental exhibition of unconventional gallery venue curated by the students. In the process of venue selection, the activation of spaces is also considered.
Something there is that doesn’t love a wall,
That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it,
And spills the upper boulders in the sun;
And makes gaps even two can pass abreast.
…
There where it is we do not need the wall:
He is all pine and I am apple orchard.
My apple trees will never get across
And eat the cones under his pines, I tell him.
He only says, “Good fences make good neighbours.”
– “Mending Wall” Robert Frost
I must not gaze at them although
Your eyes are dawning day;
I must not watch you as you go
Your sun-illumined way;
I hear but I must never heed
The fascinating note,
Which, fluting like a river reed,
Comes from your trembing throat;
I must not see upon your face
Love’s softly glowing spark;
For there’s the barrier of race,
You’re fair and I am dark.
Barriers are everywhere in life. According to Cambridge Dictionary, “barrier” stands for ‘a long pole, fence, wall, or natural feature, such as a mountain or sea, that stops people from going somewhere’; or ‘anything that prevents people from being together or understanding each other’. Railings, signs, rules are embedded in one’s subconscious, influencing every move. From culture to interpersonal relationship, from Robert Frost to Claude McKay, one always lives within the invisible barriers. This unidentifiable “barrier” imprisoned not only in body but in mind.
“+1440” is an off-site exhibition, an expansion of ordinary site and time. From Laurin Keul’s untitled photography series, exploring the physical barrier among our day to day live, and between the concept of locations. To MA Wing Man’s ‘In the Lack of’ expressing individual barrier carried by one’s self. From CHAN Cheuk Yan’s ‘Salvation’ challenging barrier in an intimated way, disputing the “barrier” imposed on us by our society. To CHUNG Wing Shan’s ‘There is ___mm between Chung and Ying’ introducing barrier in non-barrier condition, triggering our definition on barrier. We hope to vary from the definite, the existing perception of space and rules. Arising consciousness of “barrier” in a different perspective.
