Dr. Koon Wai Bong

Koon Wai Bong received his B.A. and M.F.A. from The Chinese University of Hong Kong and his D.F.A. from RMIT University. He attained the Rising Artist Award (2003), a Merit from National Exhibition of Arts, China (2004), and Hong Kong Contemporary Art Biennial Award (2009). His artworks were presented at International Ink Painting Biennial of Shenzhen (2010), Taipei International Modern Ink Painting Biennial (2012), The Past is Continuing (Hong Kong Heritage Museum, 2015) and The Weight of Lightness (M+, 2017). He organised solo exhibitions including TRANSpose (The Museum of East Asian Art, UK, 2013), and In the Breeze and Shén Yóu (Asia Art Center in Taipei and Beijing, 2017 and 2019 respectively), and exhibited widely across Hong Kong, Mainland, Taiwan, US, UK, Germany, Belgium and Singapore. His paintings have been collected by Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Ashmolean Museum of Oxford University, M+, Hong Kong Museum of Art and CUHK’s Art Museum.

Attained a commission project funded by Hong Kong Museum of Art for a production of an installation work titled ‘Crisp Air in a Bamboo Grove’, 2018.
 
Attained a General Research Fund (GRF) from University Grants Committee (UGC) for a research project titled ‘An Exploration of Landscape Aesthetic, Hong Kong Scenic Sites and Cultural Imagination’, 2018. 

 

With my experiences as an ink artist and an educator at tertiary level for years, my teaching philosophy is to assist my students to recognise the essence of the great tradition of Chinese art, yet not compromise with their sense of contemporaneity.
