“On Duration” presents newly commissioned work by eight emerging artists, who set out to respond to the philosophical “trolley problem”. Originally put forward by British theorist Philippa Foot, this hypothetical dilemma involves a runaway trolley speeding towards five people tied up on the track. Standing nearby is “I” who controls the lever that can make the unstoppable trolley switch to a sidetrack with only one person tied up on it. Tasked to decide whether to pull the lever or not, “I” was actually given the question of whether it is right to kill one person in order to save five lives.
Taking this conundrum as the departure point, the artists individually and collectively seek to unpack their ideas concerning time, ethics, and values. Their works span painting, printmaking, sculpture, videography and installation. Just as the French philosopher Henri Bergson redefined the notion of time as the uncountable, indivisible duration, the eight artists in “On Duration” also focus on the medium of time in a similar vein. Their practices address immeasurable elements in life, and together present interesting ideas evoked by both socio-political and physical environments.
“On Duration” features works by Chuan Lok, Lau Wai Hing Katy, Leung Lok Kwan Cass, Cassie Kaixin Liu, Mak Wing Yeung Philip, Shawn Tang, Wong Ching In Janet, and Zeng Chi Pang Triple. The exhibition is on view through 6 to 25 September 2019, at the AVA gallery, Kai Tak campus.
